Fitting Wedding Dresses
Getting a dress fitting for your big day, is a big deal. And if you’ve never been through a dress fitting before it can be a bit daunting. But don’t worry, you’re in good hands. We’ll guide you through the whole process, and provide you with any additional help you need through out.
Getting ready for you fitting
You’ll need to make sure you have your dress ready, hang it up a few days before hand if it’s been packed in a box. If you have a hooped underskirt also make sure this is assembled. You’ll need the underwear you’ll be wearing on the day, your shoes, your veil (if you’re wearing one). And and belts or accessories that will affect the dress or need stitching on.
Bridal fittings are done from the studio in Shepton Mallet. So please ensure you have everything with you. We have a changing area, and we ask that you wear your bridal underwear for the fitting (this is important, especially for bras – if you’re going braless then you can ignore this). You can change into you underwear at the studio if you wish or wear it to the appointment if you’re more comfortable.
Have a dressing Helper If Needed
If you have a particularly complex gown, that has a train, is a corset style or any type that will require the assistance of your bridesmaids (or your aid) to fasten/help you get in to, it would help if they could attend the fitting as well.
Once everyone is comfortable you’ll need to get into your dress. At this point you may need the help for someone else, especially if its a big or heavy dress. We’re there to help if you need us.
We’ll have a look over the dress, to see where it does and doesn’t fit. Then we will pin fit it, just like a normal fitting.
A bridal fitting can take a few hours, especially if we have to pin a very large hem. Be prepared that you will be on your feet for quite some time. Please make sure you’ve eaten something earlier in the day. Standing still for long periods can make you feel faint.
Once complete, we’ll take the dress away and get to work. When it’s ready we’ll let you know. And we’ll do a second fitting. Some wedding dresses may require more than two fittings. The second fitting won’t take as long as the first. Although you may still need you bridesmaid/aid there to help with dressing.
How far in advance should I book my fitting?
On average you should book your dress fitting 3 to 6 months before your wedding. This allows time for multiple fittings, as well as any changes in body shape should you be dieting or exercising in the run up to your wedding.
The more elaborate the dress, the more time will required to alter it.
